Apple's return on equity crossed 170% in fiscal 2025, according to the company's own 10-K. DuPont analysis, a decomposition method used since the 1920s, breaks that single number into the three separate drivers that produced it: profit margin, asset efficiency, and balance-sheet leverage.
Breaking Return on Equity Into Three Levers
Return on equity in its simplest form is net income divided by shareholders' equity. That single ratio hides three different stories: how much profit a company keeps from each dollar of sales, how many dollars of sales it generates from its asset base, and how much of that asset base is funded by shareholders versus by liabilities.
The DuPont method, developed at the DuPont chemical company and now standard in equity analysis, expresses ROE as a product of three ratios: net profit margin (net income divided by revenue), asset turnover (revenue divided by average total assets), and the equity multiplier (average total assets divided by average shareholders' equity). Multiplying the three together returns the original ROE figure, but with each factor isolated.
Using Apple's fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed with the SEC on October 31, 2025, and the prior year's filing for the average-balance inputs the method requires: net profit margin was 26.9%, asset turnover was 1.15 times, and the equity multiplier was 5.54 times. Multiplied together, those three figures produce a return on equity of 171.4%.
Fiscal 2025 Margin and Turnover Both Improved
Two of the three components moved in the same direction. Net profit margin rose from 24.0% to 26.9%, helped by an effective tax rate that fell from 24.1% to 15.6% after a prior-year state aid tax charge rolled off. Asset turnover ticked up from 1.09 to 1.15 times, meaning each dollar of the balance sheet generated slightly more revenue, consistent with net sales growing 6% to $416.2 billion while total assets stayed roughly flat.
Neither of those two shifts, on its own, explains a jump from 157% to 171% ROE. The multiplication effect does: a stronger margin and a stronger turnover ratio compound rather than add.
The Equity Multiplier Fell as the Denominator Grew Faster Than Assets
The third component moved the opposite way. Apple's equity multiplier dropped from 6.03 to 5.54 times, which on its own would pull ROE down, not up. The filing's statement of shareholders' equity shows why: average shareholders' equity rose from $59.5 billion to $65.3 billion year over year, a faster increase than the roughly flat asset base, even though Apple still repurchased $90.1 billion of stock in fiscal 2025.
Equity grew because retained earnings, share-based compensation additions, and other comprehensive income together outpaced net share repurchases and dividends this particular year. In fiscal 2024, by contrast, buybacks and dividends had outpaced net income, shrinking average equity and pushing the multiplier higher. The filing does not attribute this shift to a stated capital-allocation policy change, so it is reported here as what the equity roll-forward shows, not as a declared strategy.
What the Ratio Doesn't Show About Balance-Sheet Risk
DuPont analysis explains where a reported ROE number comes from, not whether that number reflects durable competitive advantage or a thin equity base. A high equity multiplier means a small equity denominator is doing a lot of the arithmetic work, which is also the reason different data providers report different ROE figures for the same company: some use ending equity, others use the average. By that ending-balance convention, Apple's fiscal 2025 ROE works out closer to 152%, not 171%, a full 19-point difference driven entirely by which balance the calculation uses. Readers comparing ROE figures across sources should check which convention is being applied before treating the numbers as directly comparable.
